Admissions Requirements



The Admissions Committee constituted by faculty members evaluates applications. The applicants must comply with, among other requirements, those established by the Puerto Rico Board of Medical Examiners and its regulations:

The applicant must have a Bachelor's Degree in Natural Sciences or Pre-Medical studies, or its equivalent, obtained by the applicant with a minimum general point average of 2.5, and which must consist of at least ninety (90) credits, including the following subjects:

*Including eight (8) credits in Organic Chemistry and eight (8) credits of Inorganic Chemistry.
**These minimum requirements are in addition to the basic courses offered in some Schools (University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus). The basic courses offered in Physics, Biology, and Social Sciences do not substitute the above-mentioned list.
***Six (6) credits of Honor English passed with A or B may substitute the required twelve (12) credits.
****The Puerto Rico Medical Examiners Board recommends that the courses be taken in natural sciences.

If the applicant graduated from an university in Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Board of Medical Examiners will accept only a Bachelor's Degree in Sciences, pre-medical studies or its equivalent only from universities accredited by the Puerto Rico Council on Higher Education.

In case the degree was obtained from foreign universities approved by the Puerto Rico Board of Medical Examiners, it is the applicant's responsibility to demonstrate that courses are equivalent to the pre-medical studies or bachelor's degree in accordance with the curriculum of the University of Puerto Rico, San Juan Bautista School of Medicine that will give the credit or certification of the studies completion.

For students who completed their undergraduate studies before June 1996, the following requirements must be satisfied:

To begin with the admissions process the applicant must:

§         Submit an application through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) at www.aamc.org/students/amcas/start.htm.   The deadline is December 15

§         Non-refundable certified check or money order for the amount of $100.00. 

§         Official transcripts from all institutions attended (undergraduate and graduate)

§            Official results of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) minimum score of 19, not older than three (3) years send by www.aamc.org/mcat

§            Two (2) letters of recommendation from science professors, which must be directly sent to San Juan Bautista School of Medicine.  We also accept AMCAS letters.

§           One (1) letter of recommendation from a community leader specifying any community and/or   volunteer work.

§         Negative Certificate of Criminal Record

Upon acceptance, the applicant must submit the following documents:    

§         Health Certificate (accompanied by the RPR and PPD or Chest X-Ray Results)

§         Hepatitis B Vaccine

§         Chicken-pox Vaccine or release of responsibility

§         Physicians Report

§         One (1) 2"x 2"

§         Original Birth Certificate

Interview

  • An important part of the admission process is the personal interview. Qualified applicants will be interviewed by Faculty Members. The interviews are by appointment and the applicant pays all related expenses. The Interview Coordinator and the Admissions Officer will schedule the interviews directly with applicants.
  • On the day of the interview the applicant will meet with two members of the Faculty. The applicant will also have the opportunity to clarify any doubts with the admissions and financial aid officer. The Dean of Students Office personnel will escort the applicant on a tour of the facilities. The applicant will also receive information on student housing.
  • It should be pointed out that the appointment interview does not guarantee admission, it is only a part of the overall process of admission to San Juan Bautista School of Medicine.

    Additional Requirements

    1. All students under twenty- one (21) years of age must present an immunization certificate, in accordance with the provisions of Law 25 of September 25, 1983.
    2. Within ten (10) calendar days following the notification of admission, the student must pay the amount of $1,000 in order to reserve their seat. This amount is not refundable, but it will be credited towards tuition and fees.
    3. Students must be fluent in both in Spanish and in English. 
    4. First year students must have a laptop computer before beginning of classes. It is recommended that students meet with the Academic Associate Dean for Biomedical Sciences in order to receive proper advice.

    Advanced Standing

    The Admissions Committee will consider applications for admission to third year of applicants who have completed two years of Basic Sciences at a recognized medical school and have passed the first step of the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Exam).

    The applicant must submit the following documents:

      1. Application Form

      2. Non-refundable certified check or money order for $100.00.

      3.Official transcript from the medical school where the candidate completed the first two years of Biomedical Sciences.

      4.Official transcripts from all institutions attended (undergraduate and graduate)

      5.Official results of the MCAT

      6.Official Certification of the USLME Step I.  * The Admissions Committee will only consider one attempt results.*  

      7.Dean’s letter using the MSPE form, “Medical Student Performance Evaluation”, which must certify the applicant current status.

      8. Two (2) letters of recommendation from medical school attended.

      9.   One (1) letter of recommendation from a community leader.

    10.A letter indicating his/her interest to be considered in our Institution.

    11.Criminal Background Check.

     Upon acceptance, the applicant must submit the following documents: 

    1.  Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

    2.  Health Certificate (accompanied by the RPR and PPD or Chest X-Ray Results)

    3.  Original Birth Certificate

    4.  Health Certificate

    5.  Physician’s Report

    6.  Immunization Certificate which includes (Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Meniningitis, Influenza and Chicken-pox Vaccines or release of responsibility).

    7.  Evidence of withdrawal of last medical school attended.

    8.    One 2" x 2" photo
