Foreword

The history of San Juan Bautista School of Medicine (SJBSM) dates from its funding in 1978 to the beginning of the 21 century. This was a period of unprecedented expansion of knowledge in the medical fields and the accompanying search for effective ways to teach and evaluate the cognitive knowledge and clinical skills of future medical practitioners.

This web-site is intended for faculty members, teachers, administrators and medical students, who are searching for an institution with excellent medical education credentials. The SJBSM is a not-for-profit institution of higher education, entrusted with the obligation of serving the people of Puerto Rico, in adherence to the ideas of a democratic society. Knowledge and clinical skills should de placed at the service of the community, through the professors, researchers, students and alumni.

Throughout its history, the SJBSM has changed, as new and improved methods of assessing knowledge and competency have emerged. Within this web-site we aim to describe the work of the school for the past years and the major activities at various stages, as well as our involvement in community medical education and service. The SJBSM, as part of our society, should respond to its needs, exercising leadership in academic endeavors and research, to facilitate the wellbeing of the individual, family and community.

The present challenge is to develop a Regional Academic Health Center, which makes the social and the academic endeavors, vital and mutually reinforcing parts of the SJBSM mission.
